Surrounded By Thousands Who Love Each Other

And it was amazing.

The plan to go into Philly was last second, to be among so many at Independence Hall with President Barack Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama, Bruce Springsteen, Jon Bon Jovi, and of course, Democrat Elect for President, Madame Secretary Hillary Clinton. History was being made last night and hopefully today. In the birthplace of our nation last night, I was there to hear and be among the many, who love each other and believe that Love Trumps Hate.

So it started on Facebook like this:

My friends were like, Hey, who wants to drive down? A few of us were like Me!!! I know Philly very well having lived there in Center City on 15th and Locust. So we decided to take the PATCO train from Collingswood, NJ across and get off at 8th and Market. But first, teh kids had to get picked up from school, etc. So we didn’t get there until pretty late.

Market Street was shut down and everyone was re-routed around Independence Hall, (due to security), and we ended up in a LOOOONG line all the way down to Lombard St. to Jim’s Cheesesteaks on South St.(my favorite place, forget Pat’s or Gino’s!). We kind of knew we weren’t going to get very close to anything. The main thing was to be there, with the kids. I wanted my 10 year old daughter to be there, but she’s just getting over a head cold and still has a very nasty cough. There were a lot of families there with their children, moms with their daughters, both old and young. But my friend Jen drove her mini van with her 2 youngest, and our friend Kim and her oldest daughter joined us.

We did hear Bruce and Jon Bon Jovi, BOTH from New Jersey so my home state was very well represented thank you very much 😉 There were protests of course, but those of us for Hillary, we were so nice, and polite. Everyone was happy to be there, it was like a big happy family. You couldn’t have  asked for a more beautiful fall evening, no one was complaining. The common goal was that we were THERE. Not once did I feel like my life was threatened or did I feel unsafe. Even in the massive crowds.

We felt safe, not violated, not worried(at least I didn’t), I mean, yes, it was crazy crowded, but not out of complete control. No fighting, no craziness.

My friends and I got back on the PATCO via the 8th and Market stop easily enough although we had to go around to Arch St. over. The fun part was that we got to walk in the middle of the streets.

We were tired from being on our feet, thirsty, a bit hungry, the kids were just awesome, they stuck it out and were amazing. But they wanted to be there, and that’s the best part. The kids that were there WANTED to be there! They were excited to see the President of the United States of America and the next President, a woman, who is a mom and and a grandma. They can relate to that.

Below is my iPhone video from where we were standing last night.

I decided to use my new Olympus OM-D E-M5II mirrorless camera and I rented the Olympus M. Zuiko ED 12-40mm f2.8 Pro lens and the Olympus FL-600R flash. However I didn’t know that there is a secret to that lens to enable the autofocus and that is to pull out a certain ring on the lens, and so all night I was really frustrated and had to be in Manual focus in nearly all dark situations, like years ago with my Nikon FM camera. I couldn’t figure it out, so I took out my Olympus M. Zuiko ED 40-150mm f4.0-5.6R lens, and then the autofocus was just fine. I also had a learning curve with the flash as well. I’m just so used to Canon, so I got everything figured out. I didn’t want to return that Pro lens though, it was really nice and now that I know what to do, I wish that I had more time with it. I have to say, I carried 2 lenses and a flash in 1 pack that was attached to my Think Tank Photo Modular system all night and it weighed next to nothing! I SUPER loved that.

A huge thank you to my parents who enabled me to go last night and helped out with our daughter. Without you both, I would not have been able to go. I love you both very much. And thank you to my friends, I’m so happy that I went!

9/11 The Way I Remember It

Our experience of 9/11 was being woken up by the radio that we have set to a certain time as our alarm. We lived in a small section of North Hollywood, CA called Valley Village. We’re both from NJ so our families were on the East coast.

My mom had just flown back home to NJ and was supposed to fly into Newark but instead went into Philly and got in either that morning of 9/11 really early like a Red Eye or in late, the evening of 9/10.

We were listening to Ralph Garman on the Kevin and Bean show, something about him was not right, something about the Twin Towers. I was sort of listening, half awake, and my husband, David started to really wake me up. That’s when he turned on the news(we put it on the Today Show), only to see one of the Twin Towers up in smoke and flames.

It didn’t seem real at all, it was like a scene from an action movie and I expected to see Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis to fly over to save everyone.

We then got a call from my parents who were up in NJ, they told us to turn on the news and we said that we already were watching. Then I called our friends in Oregon for them to turn on the Today show. I also called my friend Lisa to turn on the news and to call her mom. In time a few minutes later, I can’t remember, after hanging up,  I think to see the other plane to hit the other tower, which we saw live on t.v. Our mouths dropped in disbelief….plus a few curse words…and prayers.

We kept watching, I mean how couldn’t we stop? Never did we think that those buildings would fall like that. No one did. And then they collapsed.

Once again:

Our mouths dropped in disbelief….a lot more curse words…and prayers.

All I kept thinking about were the poor people that worked on those top floors, and the ones that worked in the levels below for the PATH train station. It was like an entire city below those towers, but it was actually a mall. Every time I would go there, I felt the weight of those buildings above me until I reached the sidewalks. There were fast food restaurants, a 1 hour photo lab, a dry cleaners too I think. I hope that all of those people got out in time. Then I thought of some friends of mine that worked in the city, and my friend’s father who was also in the city that had a compromised immune system due to being very sick. With all of that dust and debris I was very worried for him.

Then we heard about the plane that hit the Pentagon(American Airlines Flight 77) and the passengers that helped to deliberately crash the plane(United Airlines Flight 93) into a field in Stonycreek, PA, and prevent it from hitting its intended target.

David had to go into work, his new job at a Termite Art Productions (which later became Creative Differences, now located in N. Hollywood) in Studio City,  and this was his first week. I had to go to Bel Air Camera to do some graphic design work for their Los Angeles Times ad, and they were located very close to the Federal Building in Westwood. It was hard to get any work done that day. No helicopters or planes were up in the sky unless it was military. All around and on top of the Federal building were men and women securing it with automatic rifles.

The owner of Bel Air Camera gave his employees $50 to spend in Westwood Village to support the businesses that day.  It was also to show the terrorists that we weren’t afraid to go out and about our day, like a  f***k you to them. I will never forget that, it was a great show of patriotism and community.

Were we scared? Yes. But then, we stopped being scared.

That night, no one could really sleep it seemed. The air space above us was quiet, but the community was alive with the sounds of people and a candlelight vigils on the corners, waving their flags, cars, trucks honking their horns with the American flags waving from them. People lined the sidewalks shouting USA, waving the flag, showing a force in numbers.

My husband and I somehow got on a firetruck with the local fire department and some of the firemen, with my film camera, documenting what I saw. I didn’t use a flash, grabbing some 400 speed black and white film,  I used my Nikon N70(F70 outside of the US) and the fasted lens that I had at the time, my Nikon 20mm f 2.8 lens, As you can see, some of these images are blurry and far from perfect. But I believe that they captured the spirit of the emotions and what was going on that evening in our  neighborhood. I do have more images from that night I think, it’s just sometimes hard to look at and remember that day.

The next morning I went to eat breakfast at a favorite place in NoHo(North Hollywood), I just had to get away from the t.v. and so did others around me it seemed. Everyone was talking but we were quiet. No aircraft was out still, unless it was military out on patrol, and if you’ve ever lived out there, you’ll realize just how quiet it was without the constant drone and noise of planes and helicopters, so for me at least, it was a little bit of a blessing for the state of my nerves. I did picked up the L.A. Times, and still have that newspaper packed away.

A few weeks later, we did fly back East to CT for one of my best friend’s wedding. She and her husband had family fly over from Ireland and the UK. The airport experience was very different, lines were longer, more security, and very strict rules about what you could and couldn’t take on your flight. Screw the terrorists who did this! Nothing was going to stop us or anyone from going on with what we wanted to do!

The wedding was beautiful and we all had a great time!

Myself and my husband sometimes still have a hard time looking at images and footage from 9/11, especially my husband who has worked for tv shows that are about 9/11 and has had to go through footage over and over again non-stop(he was an assistant editor on WTC – 9/11 Stories From The Ruins and then other shows that had more footage for them about that day).

Sadly, many  very brave 9/11 rescue workers, and people who were in the direct or surrounding areas, had to beg Congress to continue with the help they needed to provide free medical care and services and it FINALLY passed in December 2015. Down to the WIRE, but it passed. These men and women have cancer, “the World Trade Center cough” and more medical issues that came about due to the fact that when the towers came down, they released all of these vast amounts of chemicals, like carcinogens, jet fuel, asbestos, plastics, metal, fiberglass and who knows what else and the wind blew it all over the place. Also let’s not forget that for about 90 days, the site was smoldering. Newsweek recently did an excellent article on this very subject.

Do you have anything to share about day, something that sticks out that you want to share? Please leave a comment below, and thank you for taking the time to look at my post.

Kayaking the Crosswicks Creek For The First Time

This summer I’ve been spending a lot of time with my family. One of the outings we’ve always wanted to do together was to learn how to kayak. But before going out, buying one and the other stuff you need, we thought it would be a good idea to first take a lesson. Also in our area, the you need to have a very good understanding of the tides. We live on the Delaware River and it’s a tidal river that goes out to the Atlantic ocean.

So I contacted Mr. Mitchell, he’s one of the second grade teachers here at Clara Barton Elementary School in Bordentown, NJ and he has his own business, Greenwave Paddling. He is a professional kayaker who gives lessons and tours along the creeks in our areas.

I originally wanted to bring my Canon Mark 5DIII with the 24-70 f2.8L lens and the 70-200 f2.8L non-IS lens. But I thought that perhaps just for starters, since I was learning and it was our first time, I brought my Canon S100 point and shoot and of course my iPhoneSE.

We first met him at the Bordentown Beach so that he could properly  fit us with life vests, instruct us on paddling techniques, safety, show us all about the kayaks that we were using, getting into them, making sure that when were seated the kayaks that we were in them properly, and that then we were off!

Having lived along the shores of the Delaware River, Blacks Creek and Crosswicks Creek all of my life. I have never been out on the water of either of them. Not that I never wanted to, no… the opportunity just never came up. So for me I was in heaven and loved it!

I sat in the front with Mr. Mitchell behind me, we both were paddling, while my husband and our daughter were in the other. Once we got past the light rail road bridge, this is what I saw, the beginning of Crosswicks Creek. It was a gorgeous day and just perfect for what we were doing. We brought along water, snacks, and we did stop to rest a few times. Mr. Mitchell talked to us about the history of the creek, our town and the Revolutionary War, nature, what to look for and we just enjoyed the day, because as you can see by the images…it was beautiful. KayakingGreenwavePaddlingDeirdre Ryan Photography3KayakingGreenwavePaddlingDeirdre Ryan Photography11KayakingGreenwavePaddlingDeirdre Ryan Photography9KayakingGreenwavePaddlingDeirdre Ryan Photography35

This was an amazing adventure, we never once felt unsafe or insecure. It was relaxing, we were able to truly enjoy our surroundings. Our daughter paddled and did her share very well. This is something as a family we truly recommend and we will be doing this again with Greenwave Paddling. Go to the site and check it out. Thank you Mr. Mitchell for a great time, see you soon!

Ocean City, Part 3

Thursday the family wanted to do some indoor activities, and Ocean City, NJ has quite a few of these.

I had a ticket for a free round of indoor Haunted Mini Golf, but first we did a laser type of challenge and a really cool mirror maze. I only posted 2 pictures because I don’t want to spoil too many things about it it. It was a lot of fun, and air conditioned! We had to wear plastic gloves to keep things clean, because everyone touches those mirrors.

We encountered a dead horseshoe crab…
OCNJDeirdre Ryan Photography282.jpg It did start to rain, my husband and daughter went to go see a movie, I stayed in the motel room to read my book and watch the Democratic National Convention. To be honest, part of me wished that I could’ve been there with a press pass photographing the event….

Friday we checked out and headed to Margate to see Lucy The Elephant, a 6-foot high structure in the shape of an elephant that you can con into and climb to the top. Lucy is a great destination for everyone to see at least once and we lucked out with the weather. She is listed with the National Park Registry of Historical Landmarks and is one of New Jersey’s many treasures. Our daughter had never seen Lucy and she really enjoyed her.

OCNJDeirdre Ryan Photography307

The week seemed to have caught up with our little one as you can see, and she slept the entire way pretty much on the way home.

We did spend a lot of time on the beach, I’m not sharing all of my personal photos here. But here is another thought of mine on the Panasonic Lumix 100 LX camera:

I do LOVE this camera, truly I do, and with the Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS100 I was hoping for some improvements and sadly all I saw was a smaller sensor and a slower lens. DPReview gives it a Gold review but for those that want a zoom lens that stops to only f5.6 instead of the maximum aperture of f/1.7-2.8 that the older Lumix 100 LX gives you then it’s not for me.

The Lumix 100LX had a few miss focus’s, even when I had the spot focus on. Once I opened them up, I saw that they were back focused. Perhaps it was the camera that I was renting? Hard to say, but even with the multi-focus points I found that I had to re-compose quite often. I did enjoy the manual focus feature on it, and used it a few times.

People complained about the overall size of this camera in past reviews. Personally, I can’t stand a super tiny camera! Now I have small hands, but I like the bulk of certain cameras because I feel that I can use the stabilization of it for certain shots. I come from the days of film, heavy cameras, those things were made of metal. So I LIKED the way that this felt, and it was still lighter than my usual gear. So what that it doesn’t fit in my pocket!

This was my second time renting it, the first time I got it for the East Coast Comic Con earlier this year. I haven’t posted those yet, but I might later today or next week 😉

In case you missed them, here are my other posts:

Ocean City, Part 1

Ocean City, Part 2

Ocean City, Part 2

Tuesday was a full beach day. Of course I started my day early, got my coffee at Ocean City Coffee Company, my book, camera and sat on the beach to read before it gets crowded.OCNJDeirdre Ryan Photography198

Now I really enjoyed and loved the Panasonic Lumix 100 LX camera and for this vacation it had everything I needed. A fast lens, large enough sensor, shoots in RAW, etc. However there was a quirk that I had no idea about until much later and I’ll get into this later on.

After spending the day on the beach we ate dinner at Ocean Cafe, and this time with the entire family. While waiting for our food, we heard the Mummers on the boardwalk stop right outside the restaurant. It was really cool!

Found this original Pacman and Ms. Pacman machines…OCNJDeirdre Ryan Photography344 We let her play a few more games including the Batman pinball game, and by then we were exhausted and wanted to get back to our rooms. We had spent the day bodyboarding on the waves, looking for shells, and walking the boards after dinner.
OCNJDeirdre Ryan Photography354

I let my husband take a few pictures.

The next morning I again woke up early to find that after it rained, there were these cloud in the skies that lingered and it looked like the sun was setting, when in fact it was rising. So before getting my coffee, I headed in the opposite direction towards the rising sun to capture these images:

OCNJDeirdre Ryan Photography194.jpg OCNJDeirdre Ryan Photography197.jpg
I kept chasing the light and so I found a spot and sat down, putting the camera down on the boards while people were jogging and riding their bikes around me. I shoot in manual mode, so these were almost straight out of the camera with some adjustments.
OCNJDeirdre Ryan Photography198.jpg OCNJDeirdre Ryan Photography199.jpg OCNJDeirdre Ryan Photography200.jpg
Then I went onto the beach and continued:

OCNJDeirdre Ryan Photography201.jpg OCNJDeirdre Ryan Photography204.jpg OCNJDeirdre Ryan Photography205.jpg OCNJDeirdre Ryan Photography206.jpg OCNJDeirdre Ryan Photography207.jpg
And that’s when I noticed a lone horseshoe crab. The tide was already out, and by the time the beach crowd arrived, I know that someone would try something with it. I man came by and he took off his shirt, placed it around it, and then put the crab in a spot so that it could safely get back into the water. But I first took some shots:

VacationSelfieOceanCityNJiPhoneSEwwwDeirdreRyanPhotographyHere’s me taking a selfie with my iPhone SE, no filter in front of the Ocean City Music Pier.  I remember when I was a little girl you could set up for the day underneath that pier. Also you could walk underneath the boardwalk, and myself and other kids would throw up sand between the boards at people as the walked above us….but I guess Hurricane Sandy changed all of that.
I started to walk along the beach to go get my coffee and I found another one, but this one was on the move…

It was super hot and muggy every single day. Even early in the morning, you could feel it. This was the week of that super bad heat have…
OCNJDeirdre Ryan Photography242.jpg

Now back to the one quirk that I found really annoying about that camera:
Even though I had the image settings set to RAW, I found out that for some reason the camera was defaulting to jpeg every time I turned it off. I brought my laptop down with me to back everything up, however I thought that I had the proper adapter, when in fact it was my old black Macbook’s. So I had Amazon Prime send another one, but I didn’t get it until Wednesday. Once I got it, and opened up the images, THAT”S when I saw that pretty much ALL of my images were jpeg and not RAW!!!! The evening shots on Sunday? Jpeg. Everything from Monday? Jpeg. The mummers? Jpeg. Those sunrise images? Jpeg. So every single time I turned off the camera for any length of time, I had to keep putting it back to RAW even though my settings were set to RAW, it still defaulted to jpeg. I couldn’t find a way to fix this 🙁 If anyone here knows what to do about this, please leave a comment…or if you’ve had a similar experience I would love to know about it.

Later on that day, we went to Castaway Cove so that we could go on some rides. It’s pretty much next door to our motel.

Eventually I’ll get to the video, but for now these are what happened on Tuesday and Wednesday of our week’s stay. If you missed my last post click here to get caught up, thanks!

Ocean City, NJ Part 1

We had just visited my grandfather at Vet’s Memorial Home in Vineland, NJ and driving to Ocean City, NJ to start our family vacation for the week. My friend Veronica, a professional photographer, was coming down the next day to take family portraits of us, Tuesday was my parent’s wedding anniversary, and most of all…we wanted to have fun.

OCNJDeirdre Ryan Photography194 OCNJDeirdre Ryan Photography196

I saw the message on Facebook’s private messaging app…something like if this was a sick joke..but sadly it wasn’t. Our dear friend Patrick Cashin died suddenly in his home. http://www.clownlink.com/2016/07/rip-pat-cashin/

He was only 47 years old, married to the love of his life, with 2 boys and was a professional clown. His memorial will be this Monday.

We got unpacked at our motel, The Coral Sands, got our daughter settled, and then my husband and I broke down and cried. Pat was his childhood friend, and his sister Lillian’s best friend, so they grew up together. My friend here in Bordentown just so happens to be married to his best guy adult friend, John.

Pat would’ve wanted us to have a great time in spite of what happened. Regardless it was very hard to do, neither of us wanted to be online with Facebook unless it was to interact with our friends about our friend.

So here I will now continue, to post….
I rented the Panasonic Lumix LX 100 and my husband rented a GoPro from www.borrowlenses.com. I didn’t want to walk around with my large DSLR and lenses for this trip.
OCNJDeirdre Ryan Photography244 OCNJDeirdre Ryan Photography247

So we went to go eat dinner at Ike’s Seafood and then had a gelato at Shriver’s. We stayed up pretty late, but that’s what you do when you’re on vacation down the shore 🙂OCNJDeirdre Ryan Photography252 OCNJDeirdre Ryan Photography254 OCNJDeirdre Ryan Photography256 OCNJDeirdre Ryan Photography258 The next morning I woke up wicked early, got my coffee from Ocean City Coffee Company(they were handing out free coffee samples that morning) on the boardwalk, read my book on the beach. Then I met my husband and daughter, and we rode our bike to Ovie’s for breakfast. OCNJDeirdre Ryan Photography200.jpgVacationSelfieOceanCityNJiPhoneSEwwwDeirdreRyanPhotography.comOceanCityCoffeeNJbyDeirdreRyanPhotographyiPhoneSE At 8:30AM they raise the flag every morning on top of Maui Wowi’s.

Later we really just hung out inside our room, getting ready for our photoshoot. It was REALLY humid, so since my mother and I have naturally curly hair, we stayed inside until it was time. We met my friend in front of Shriver’s Salt Water Taffy and Fudge, while we waited I took a few photos. OCNJDeirdre Ryan Photography284.jpg OCNJDeirdre Ryan Photography287.jpg OCNJDeirdre Ryan Photography316.jpg OCNJDeirdre Ryan Photography318.jpg

We brought our $5 kite to use as a prop and I took a few photos of our daughter flying it while my friend took pictures of her as well. OCNJDeirdre Ryan Photography324.jpg OCNJDeirdre Ryan Photography330.jpg OCNJDeirdre Ryan Photography336.jpg OCNJDeirdre Ryan Photography354.jpg

She brought an assistant and she had fun flying the kite too 🙂 My husband helped with the reflector a little, he is my assistant as well, so he knows what to do! Here Veronica is posing my dad and our daughter. OCNJDeirdre Ryan Photography358.jpg

Afterwards, there was a major storm coming, so we went to dinner at Ocean Cafe on the boardwalk. Here you can see the clouds forming…it was coming and it did, although not as bad as it hit the rest of the state that day and night! OCNJDeirdre Ryan Photography366.jpg OCNJDeirdre Ryan Photography368.jpgOCNJDeirdre Ryan Photography370.jpg

I’m going to continue posting about our vacation, but please remember this:

Laugh at your mistakes and at yourself, say I love you and hug your loved ones every single day.

My Not So Tiny Tuesday Little Girl #TT

This past weekend we met up with friends of my husband’s from his high school, Cedar Ridge High that was in Old Bridge, NJ. They were all in the band, and he was a trumpet player, and I guess you could say he still is. He played the cornet, which is like a squashed up trumpet, and he has a concert French trumpet that he found at a huge flea market at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, CA.

Anyhoo, so we went on Sunday to have lunch at Pop’s Garage, which is right on the boardwalk. On a Sunday. Summertime. In July. Down Da Jersey Shore. In Asbury Park. Around 1PM= NO PARKING. We managed to find parking, but I got out with The Kid, put our names down for a table and sat at the bar inside so that we could eat something, because she was hungry and frankly, so was I. I had 2 steak tacos and she had a Quesadilla. We waited for the others, and they all eventually got a place to park, except for one other person because:

It’s a Sunday. Summertime. In July. Down Da Jersey Shore. In Asbury Park. Around 1PM= NO PARKING. Oh and she had TWO small kids in the car who were hungry and she found NO PARKING.I was sorry that she couldn’t join us, but as a parent, I didn’t blame her one bit!

All in all, we had a great time! There was one other child, he was 8, while our kid is 9. The food was really good, and then afterwards, we went to The Silverball Museum which was right next door. I’ve been wanting to go here for ages and it did not disappoint.

Playing an antique pinball game at the Silverball Museum on the Asbury Park Park, NJ boardwalk.

We then went for some ice cream, walked around and of course I had my camera and flash. So I snagged a few shots of our beautiful child <3

As a parent we do anything within reason for our children, and this is my reason for succeeding in my business. It’s why I rely on local and large businesses to come back to me no matter how small the job is.

Bordentown’s Annual Classic Car Show

We have a terrific car show that happens once a year, the Street of Dreams. This is a classic car show where the youngest car must be at least from 1991, the year I graduated from Notre Dame HS! LOL
I love volunteering at the registration tent, because this means I get to see the cars and some trucks coming in before the show officially opens. I love cars and having this happening right up the street from me is a lot of fun.
If you are a lover of cars and trucks, take a look. The money raised goes mainly towards the The Foundation For Bordentown Traditions traditional Independence Day Celebration, and the group brings about wonderful community events.

Truly one of my favorites, a 1964 Chrysler New Yorker Falcon 412, you do not see that many around these days. And this was in great condition for a car that was something that was used everyday. The owner let me sit inside and open the throttle as much as I wanted and encouraged me to go even further. It was a lot of fun!

Bordentown Girl Scout Troop Remembers Our Military For Memorial Day

Our daughter belongs to a small Junior Girl Scout troop and we go and place an American flag on every gravesite for each military man and woman that is buried at the the Brigadier General  William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Wrightstown, NJ. Our troop is among the many Daisies, Brownies, Girl Scouts, Cadets, Cub and Boy Scouts that do this every single year. We’re each given a section with an armful of flags, and at the strike of 5PM, we start to place the a flag on each site. It’s truly a moving part of the day and a personal favorite tradition that we take a part of each year.My dad loves to be a part of this, he pointed out a few where a wife was buried next to her husband. There was a freshly covered grave that the girls were looking and talking about. Afterwards, there was free hotdogs, chips and refreshments. It was really hot, the saving grace was the breeze, but a small thing considering what our military does everyday.

Our family is a military family, grandpa is a Ret. WWII Mst. Sgt. Army and still alive at the young age of 95+, my dad is a Vietnam Vet, Ret. Lt. Col Army, my cousin is Ret. Combat Navy Medic who was stationed with the Marines in Iraq. Once his time was up in the Navy, went into the Army, now he’s studying on the GI Bill at the Univ. of Chicago. My husband’s uncle was in the Navy, one of my daughter’s friends in our troop is Ret. Navy too. I’m proud of all the men AND women who are and have served and sacrificed for us.

Doing this small thing helps our children understand things a little more for Memorial Day.

Fine Art Friday-Railroad

I decided to post something I did a few years ago with one of my Holga cameras. This a plastic medium format toy camera that has the most basic of settings with a plastic lens and is most noted for it’s light leaks and if you’re not careful with forwarding the film, the frames will at times merge into each other. And as you can see, this is what happened here. I have 2-3 of these cameras and I got them for $12 each when I was in Black and White Photography 101 back in art college.

Many of of us in art college taking a course like this, this would’ve been your introduction to medium format film. Then, depending on what you wanted to do, you moved up to the Seagull twin lens, many schools had these for their students to use. Or in my case, I purchased a used Yashicamat Twin Lens that I used for many years in conjunction with my Holgas. I still have that camera, but the shutter stopped working properly and the part I was told wasn’t easy to find, so that camera sits in a display with other small film cameras as a reminder to get another or finally get the Mamiya C330 Pro Twin Lens, because those are just gorgeous and most still work and you can change the lenses on those.

Now for this particular negative, as you can see, I didn’t forward the film properly, somehow I misjudged the numbers on the roll through the little window. Not sure how that happened. But anything was possible with these things if you weren’t paying attention. So scanning it, I had to use the 120 holder and do it in parts, and then stitched it back together carefully in Photoshop.

In another lifetime, I used to work for a place that scanned using very large drum scanners. I didn’t operate them, but I know how to scan negs and other flat art. So, I have an older Epson flatbed scanner that has a film attachments to scan 35mm negatives, 35mm mounted slides, 120 film up to 4×5. The beauty of it this is that the attachment enables you to scan the negatives in the middle of the scanner. That is the “sweet spot” of a flatbed scanner, the point of highest intensity for it. Right now, I can’t use it because it’s so old, Mac’s OS won’t support it(I think Silverfast scanning software will let me use it again) and it’s a SCSII. I never used it for 35mm negs or slides, I have a dedicated negative scanner for that.

The image is in black and white, I used Ilford HP5 film. But I wanted to make it look older because of the age of the railroad bridge and history of it here in Bordentown, NJ. It reminded me of how older photos look like now, and the stones on that bridge are a brown color, they might be brownstone, but don’t quote me on that. I added the sloppy edges because if I had printed this in a traditional darkroom, this is how I would’ve left them.

Camden & Amboy railroad bridge in Bordentown, by Deirdre Ryan Photography.

Bordentown is rich in transportation history and the John Bull is a part of this, being one the first locomotives in our nation. Our railroad was one of the stops that the John Bull made. While researching for my blog post here, I found the name of the first engineer of the John Bull, was Tatem Parsons,  and he died at the age of 90 in Camden, NJ. Those of us who have lived in town all or most of our live, know this bit of history; the last engineer of the John Bull, Benjamin F. Jobes, lived just down the street from me. I found an article about our former neighbor, Mr. Sholl, whom I remember, had a huge collection of model trains in his basement. Mr. Sholl lived in that engineer’s home and it’s current owner has the house up for sale now. Click on the links that I provided, there’s a lot of great information!
