Photographing An Image For A Book

Sometimes my clients are friends or my clients most often become dear friends and this is the case here. Dolores and I met while networking during a W.I.N.(Women Interested in Networking) meetings. These were monthly meetings held at Villa Mannino’s in Bordentown, NJ on Route 130. A huge group of women would gather to meet, network, and eat lunch. It was started by Teri Petry and it was my first real introduction to getting up and explaining who I was, and what I was about in front of sometimes 80-100 people. I was very nervous, and scared. No judgement, we helped each other out, I had to have a 20 second elevator pitch and Teri had a question that was fun like, what is your favorite dessert or if you could go anywhere in the world on vacation, where would you go and you had to answer it with one thing or place.

This is where Dolores and I met and we hit it off from there, she was one of my first headshot, business clients and we fast became friends 😀

As time moved on, she met Francine Parham, introduced me, and we hit it off as well. I photographed them both and for their projects and events. They have both written and completed their book titled: The Ultimate Career Pocket Guide.

The UltimateCareerPocketGuidePhotoByDeirdreRyanPhotography

What this book is about is to help those who need to get through networking, your goals, and not just for the workplace. I see this for many in their personal and career goals, their own businesses, their current job and within the job market. I highly recommend this book!

Francine is from the corporate world and has vast experience and knowledge and Dolores is a consultant and development coach. The two have put their heads together and come up with this amazing book to help many people.

I photographed the image for their book at Jester’s Cafe, right here in Bordentown, NJ. Natural light, no assistants, no bounces or fill. I’m literally just standing in one of their large windows, using my Canon Mark 5D III and the Canon EF 50mm f1.8 lens and the Canon EF 16-35mm f2.8L lens. I know the owners, the food is great and it was the perfect time of the day to do this.

Afterwards, we ordered lunch, did some formal headshots at my house.

We laughed and had a great time, but most importantly, I understood and wanted to make sure that the focus was about what they wanted with a twist. I helped to come up with a location and suggested some ideas, and went from there. I have ideas to go further with them with hair, makeup, and more.

What I did for Dolores and Francine is help them with their branding, how they wanted to be seen on the cover for their target clients. Professional woman, talking over lunch, being casual, but serious about what it is that they’re doing. This is how they talk to other professionals. It could be anything that they are chatting about. As you can see on their websites, the images of themselves, I have photographed, is what they have envisioned and I have more ideas for them.

Here are questions to ask for yourself:

Where are you headed? Who needs to see you? What is it that you are doing? What’s next on the horizon for your business or company? Do you have a team of experts to help you visually? Can they insure that your images and presence are of the caliber that agencies and publications can expect of you? Can your images be printed for high end marketing and packaging?

If you’re ready for this step for your business, company or corporation, contact me. This is what I do, listen, make suggestions, help present my clients to their clients in the best light possible. Make sure that you and your brand look cohesive and flawless.

Christie Works The Fairness Formula Around Protestors in Town Hall Meeting

First off, I am no longer with a news outlet, so when I was called to attend this town hall meeting, I originally thought it was to cover this for a media outlet.  😉

Hope Hose Humane Fire Company is literally down the street from me, so I got my cameras, and photographed the protesters on Burlington and Willow St. And then I went inside, thinking that I would have to go and sit down, but I was pleasantly surprised to be allowed to photograph with the press and media. I did explain who I was and who I used to be with(The Packet Publication and that I am now a freelance commercial photographer), I gave my business card to the gentlemen and then settled down in a spot. I am really thankful and grateful to have been allowed to do this today.

I saw a lot of people that I knew, including Mayor of Bordentown City, Joe Malone, Ziggy Targonski, Mayor of Bordentown Township, Jill Popko, and many others in the community.

New Jersey State Governor, Chris Christie stopped by Bordentown, NJ to explain his Fairness Formula to NJEA teachers, staff, residents of Bordentown, and those from other towns. He’s calling for a fixed $6,599 in state aid per student. Supposedly this would greatly reduce property taxes in our town, which are enormous, and in other towns. Bordentown Regional School District spends about $19,851 per student and we have a graduation rate of 88.5 percent, while Asbury Park spends about $33,609 per student and their graduation rate isn’t as high, just 66 percent.

I quote David Levinsky, staff writer for the Burlington County Times:
“He said the state’s 31 poorest districts haven’t made substantial improvements in three decades, despite receiving millions in additional aid.”If money were the solution alone to this problem, those 31 districts would be the crown jewel of public education in America,” he said. “I’m tired of hearing the fiction that money will solve the problem.

“Christie was challenged during the town hall-style event on West Burlington Street by several audience members, among them Sue Altman, of Camden, who got into a lively back-and-forth debate with the governor after asking how the city’s school district would be able to provide a suitable education to students once millions of aid are phased out. “You can’t get blood from a stone. There’s no money in Camden. Where are you going to get it from?” Altman asked.

Christie pointed to the success of charter schools in Camden, saying they have had tremendous success with much less state funding. When Altman began to interrupt, Christie tossed his microphone to her. “I would love for the miracle of charter schools to come in and swoop in and save the day. I’d love it, and I’d be the first person to send my child there. But they do not serve the same demographic of children as the regular public schools. They don’t spend the same amount of money,” Altman said, pointing to the private dollars raised by some charter schools in Camden. ”We’re not talking apples to apples here,” she said, before throwing the microphone back to the governor.

Christie responded that charter schools have used different rules, approaches and methods of teaching to achieve better results, but that traditional public schools have refused to adopt similar changes, such as a longer school day or school year because of their teachers unions and collective bargaining agreements.

“There’s lots of bargains that could be made if compromise was available. But longer school days and longer school years have consistently been off the table. Because when the Legislature has proposed these types of things, we have seen the crowd come to Trenton to lobby against it,” he said.”

There were a lot of protesters from the NJEA(New Jersey Educational Association) which is the statewide union for teachers. They claim that this Fairness Formula is not fair and that it creates a disservice to the urban school districts while the suburban districts maintains funding for charter schools at the expense of the many traditional public schools in our great state.

Asking about NJ’s gas tax and having a laugh about not having to pump gas in our state and that a poll said that 70% of women didn’t want to pump gas. Having lived in other states when the weather was really hot, freezing or with torrential downpours,, yeah..I don’t want to pump gas in extreme weather. BUT I don’t like waiting around either and actually like having control over how I put fuel into my car. ChrisChristieFairnessFormulaBordentownNJHopeHoseHumaneCo1Deirdre-Ryan-Photography184.jpgChrisChristieFairnessFormulaBordentownNJHopeHoseHumaneCo1Deirdre-Ryan-Photography143.jpg

Here are two people getting their picture taken with the Governor. Some were happy with what he had to say about the Fairness Formula. Although it was hard to gauge with quite a few. ChrisChristieFairnessFormulaBordentownNJHopeHoseHumaneCo1Deirdre-Ryan-Photography188.jpg

And some didn’t get the answers they were looking for.

Emotions were high for this town hall meeting, as I’m sure they are for his other ones. There is a LOT at stake for this one.

Good Times for The Monkee’s LP Debut

The Monkee’s album, Good Times, was made available on vinyl LP last week and Randy Now’s Man Cave in Bordentown, NJ had them in limited supply. Thankfully, we were able to get a copy before he was sold out. Our daughter loves The Monkees(thanks to her mom and dad) and really wanted to get this on vinyl. Like good parents, we’ve taught her how to use a record player and tape deck. With the LP she got a mini poster, a sticker, and a coloring book!
Here is what the tracks are with the songwriters and singers listed(thanks to Wikipedia):

Yes, that is Davey Jones on the album, it was originally recorded in 1967.
Once again from Wikipedia:
“The title track was written by Harry Nilsson and a surviving demo from the late 1960s was used incorporating Nilsson’s vocals posthumously in a “duet” with Micky Dolenz. Davy Jones performs the Neil Diamond-penned track “Love to Love” which was recorded in 1967 for the Monkees’ third album in a Don Kirshner-supervised session while the group was trying to gain musical independence from Kirshner. Once he was removed, the song was discarded in favor of recording an album of songs both sung and played by the group. The resultant album was Headquarters. For its inclusion on Good Times!, Dolenz and Tork contributed new backing vocals.”

I can only imagine what it must have been like hearing that track in the studio with Davey not being there….

It’s a very good album and one that I encourage you to listen and purchase on LP or cd or download off of iTunes.

Here’s a cellphone photo of our daughter holding up her loot, The Monkee’s LP, Good Times, a coloring book, poster and a sticker. The rest I used my Canon Mark 5D III and Canon 24-70 f2.8mm L lens and some I used the Canon 600-RXT flash.

Randy was playing The Monkees tv show, so after I go our daughter the LP with the extra goodies that it came with, I took some photos. There was a photographer from The Burlington County Times, we chatted a bit. He took a photo of us in some way, but since I’m not a subscriber to that paper, I can’t see the article. I’ll go to the library and check it out there.

Bordentown’s Annual Classic Car Show

We have a terrific car show that happens once a year, the Street of Dreams. This is a classic car show where the youngest car must be at least from 1991, the year I graduated from Notre Dame HS! LOL
I love volunteering at the registration tent, because this means I get to see the cars and some trucks coming in before the show officially opens. I love cars and having this happening right up the street from me is a lot of fun.
If you are a lover of cars and trucks, take a look. The money raised goes mainly towards the The Foundation For Bordentown Traditions traditional Independence Day Celebration, and the group brings about wonderful community events.

Truly one of my favorites, a 1964 Chrysler New Yorker Falcon 412, you do not see that many around these days. And this was in great condition for a car that was something that was used everyday. The owner let me sit inside and open the throttle as much as I wanted and encouraged me to go even further. It was a lot of fun!

So many great vehicles, so little time! I met a lot of great people and women who love cars and fix up their babies and enjoy working on them. If you are one of these women, please contact me.

Who You Gonna Call? Ghostbuster’s!

Today at Randy Now’s Man Cave the new Ghostbuster’s ECTO – 1 Car pulled up in front of the shop. Instead of an ambulance, it’s an early 80’s Cadillac Hearse. About 6 of these were made for the movie during filming of the new Ghostbuster’s movie that’s coming out,  and this was one of them.

My husband and I came by around 4:30PM with our daughter and her best friend fresh from seeing The Secret Life of Pets(go see it, it’s really good, we have been waiting a year for it!), I had my Canon 5D III,  Canon 16-35mm f2.8L lens, and a Canon 600EX-RT flash on me to take some photos of it and the girls.
GhostbustersECTO - 1CarDeirdre Ryan Photography5.jpg

Randy was helping people with the kids, taking pictures of everyone with their cellphone cameras, and being awesome as usual 🙂GhostbustersECTO - 1CarDeirdre Ryan Photography20.jpg
Also today was the last chance – for a copy of the 2-dvd set RIOT ON THE DANCE FLOOR and the second edition copies of the since out of print for two years,  NO SLAM DANCING, NO STAGE DIVING, NO SPIKES with both book authors and film directors on hand to sign copies. These are about the legendary club, City Gardens that was on Calhoun Street in Trenton, NJ and Randy was a HUGE part of it.

I’m kicking myself because I completely forgot about this! I’m finally reading my first edition copy and here I was RIGHT THERE taking pictures of the car and I could’ve also had my book signed too! DANG IT! But I got some nice images of my friend Randy and that in itself makes me super happy. You can see the process of how I shot these quick portraits of him to get the one that I think is the best.

I had to work quickly because A.) there were cars driving by while I was in the middle of the street and B.) Randy was pretty busy, but somehow I knew that he didn’t get any photos of just himself with the vehicle yet by the time I got there. Randy loves to do funny poses and I love that about him, however I got him to do some pretty cool ones with the hearse.
GhostbustersECTO - 1CarDeirdre Ryan Photography9.jpg GhostbustersECTO - 1CarDeirdre Ryan Photography10.jpg GhostbustersECTO - 1CarDeirdre Ryan Photography11.jpg

I like the shot below because it’s in between him posing and he’s laughing and relaxed, having a good time with me 🙂GhostbustersECTO - 1CarDeirdre Ryan Photography12.jpg GhostbustersECTO - 1CarDeirdre Ryan Photography13.jpg GhostbustersECTO - 1CarDeirdre Ryan Photography14.jpg

Then I got the idea to have Randy sit in the back with “Slimer”, and after a couple of frames, this is my favorite shot by far. GhostbustersECTO - 1CarDeirdre Ryan Photography17.jpg

Here’s me and “Slimer” taking a “selfie” with my camera…Photo by David W. Ryan. (BTW, that camera with the lens and flash is not lightweight to hold it out like that for too long.)
I don’t know how he manages to get things to his shop or people to do concerts, but the man has a TON of connections. Thank you Randy for bringing this piece of Hollywood to our small town today. Tell him thanks by commenting on this blog post and also go to this link:

Let’s get him voted for Best Record Store and bring Bordentown even more in front of everyone than before! Thanks!

#fff Fashion Friday Flashback

Back when we lived in Los Angeles, CA, I had a friend who is gorgeous and I asked her to be my fashion model for me. So, I rented a studio downtown, I had another friend created custom jewelry who wanted to have great shots of her stuff. My friends, my husband and I had a fabulous day of creating great images.

We were all so young, in our 2o’s, no kids(except my friend who modeled at the top) and just having fun! It was still difficult because we all were working to pay the rent, the bills, student loans(still have that), eat, and basically survive. I saved up to rent that studio and it was the cheapest one that I could find and I loved that space. Got it for $400 for a full day rate, it was in a loft not too far from us when we lived in downtown L.A. in the Pico Union District. I organized everything for that day, snacks, schedule, and someone makeup. It was all for portfolios, everyone loved the images.

This one was shot in the Sequoia National Forest, we had arrived too late to get further inside to see the larger trees. She made this 12 foot long kimono, so I had her get on top of this large rock. Shot using a Yashica Mat Twin lens camera with Fuji film.

Photoshoot Fun With American Grit’s Rocky For Moms

This is one of my best friends, Lisa, my blond “sister”. I’ve known her since she was a freshman and I was a sophomore at Notre Dame High School in Lawrenceville, NJ.  Our friendship continued throughout college and into adulthood.  We’ve giggled, laughed and cried together.  When my husband and I lived in Los Angeles, she decided to follow her dream of becoming an actress from NYC to L.A., and for a time lived with us(it was so much fun!), until she got a place of her own and it was right around the corner from our apartment.  In Los Angeles is where she met her future husband, Henri.  She was one of my bridesmaids, I was one of hers. She helped to plan my baby shower, she helped to plan mine.

Now she’s been living in Texas with her husband, Henri, their daughter and son. I’m back in NJ with our daughter and my husband, working  as a commercial photographer, he as an editor for tv in NYC.

With a lot of ups and downs in her life, the worst being that Lisa has lost both of her parents to cancer. First her dad while living in Los Angeles. She would go back to NJ whenever she could and then when it was near his time, and to bury him. And then her mom. Click here to get the start/catch up of what happened in the Summer of 2014. And then a year ago, May 4th, 2015 she passed away.

Lisa has since fought her way back for her herself and her family in between and after. Wrote a book, her blog and website, getting sponsors, she’s just amazing! And recently been on the Fox tv show American Grit with John Cena.

BTW John, if you’re reading this, you might remember being on an internet radio show network called ComedyWorld and you were interviewed by Big Schwag and the guys on Wrestling 101. My husband was in the booth, and our friend called in and you took off your shirt. He has the full version, but here’s a link  to an old compilation with the clip in it.

Just last week, she came back home to NJ for one day to visit with Jenny, Megan and I. She stayed with her brother so that she could go to NYC to be interviewed by www.bikini.com and then fly back in time to compete in the Texas Shredder.

We all got to chat, have some girl time and I took some awesome photos of her wearing one of her sponsors t-shirts, Egg Whites International. I have been wanting to take photos of her for a long time, it’s something we always did. We have a lot of fun, she’s one of my favorite people to photograph, and I love her so much. I wanted her to have great images instead of cell phone pictures with sponsor swag.

With all that  she’s done and all that she’s doing now, I created a hashtag for her to remember even though, yes, she’s making these positive changes to her body, mind and spirit for her family, however deep down she’s truly doing all of this for her herself…#doitforlisa Follow her and use this hashtag to give her love and strength <3 #doitforlisa I love you and I’m proud of what you’re doing!

Bordentown Girl Scout Troop Remembers Our Military For Memorial Day

Our daughter belongs to a small Junior Girl Scout troop and we go and place an American flag on every gravesite for each military man and woman that is buried at the the Brigadier General  William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Wrightstown, NJ. Our troop is among the many Daisies, Brownies, Girl Scouts, Cadets, Cub and Boy Scouts that do this every single year. We’re each given a section with an armful of flags, and at the strike of 5PM, we start to place the a flag on each site. It’s truly a moving part of the day and a personal favorite tradition that we take a part of each year.My dad loves to be a part of this, he pointed out a few where a wife was buried next to her husband. There was a freshly covered grave that the girls were looking and talking about. Afterwards, there was free hotdogs, chips and refreshments. It was really hot, the saving grace was the breeze, but a small thing considering what our military does everyday.

Our family is a military family, grandpa is a Ret. WWII Mst. Sgt. Army and still alive at the young age of 95+, my dad is a Vietnam Vet, Ret. Lt. Col Army, my cousin is Ret. Combat Navy Medic who was stationed with the Marines in Iraq. Once his time was up in the Navy, went into the Army, now he’s studying on the GI Bill at the Univ. of Chicago. My husband’s uncle was in the Navy, one of my daughter’s friends in our troop is Ret. Navy too. I’m proud of all the men AND women who are and have served and sacrificed for us.

Doing this small thing helps our children understand things a little more for Memorial Day.

Annual St. Patty’s 5K Run for Our Local Schools

I was asked to photograph the Annual Bordentown St. Patty’s 5K Race and Family Fun 2 Mile Walk in March in Bordentown City, NJ. This is a fundraiser for the Bordentown Regional School District’s Board of Education, one that I’ve covered for before when working for The Register News under The Packet Publication. Our superintendent of the school district spoke, we had a gorilla mascot, Miss Bordentown ran, and volunteers to organize, set up and help run the event. It was great to see friends of mine with their kids in the race, we are a small community and there were other people from place in the surrounding areas. As our daughter is in the school here, this benefits her.

The race started in front of The Bordentown Home for Funerals and the Finish Line was in front of the Clara Barton Elementary and Macfarland Intermediate Schools(both schools are across the street from each other). After the race, the Family Fun Walk started as well as the awards ceremony in the Clara Barton’s All Purpose Room.

Since I live in the city, I walked over to where everything was. Packing light, I carried only my Canon 5D Mark III with the EF 70-200mm f2.8 L non IS lens and the Canon 6D with the EF 16-35mm f2.8 L lens packed into the Think Tank Retrospective bag(stashed this as well as my heavier jacket away someplace safe inside the school with other volunteers items), then when shooting used their modular belt system with the Hubba Hubba Hiney and the water bottle holder called RU Hot(love this thing!), with both cameras attached to the Black Rapid Double Slim camera strap. When I worked for the newspapers, travelling light was essential as well as having the right gear. True… if you were lucky enough to worked full time, the gear was given to you by the news outlet to use(it was theirs not yours) you always good gear and glass(lenses). But I own everything you see me carry.

Thank you to the Board of Ed for asking me to photograph this event for you, I enjoyed being out there for our community and I know that many of you all loved the images.

Studio Portraits Of My Friend Roseanne

My dear friend Roseanne has just opened her Pilates Fusion and Barre Fitness Studio here in Bordentown, NJ and I couldn’t be more proud of her! This tiny powerhouse, former ballerina, mother of three beautiful girls,  juggles a full time job, teaches Pilates both as a group class and in private homes, and is a weightlifter who holds the record for bench press at 105 lbs! She won the First Place trophy for the World Natural Powerlifting Federation(WNPF). But something tells me that she can do much more than that 😉

The above and below images are used with the permission of Rosanne Joy.

So I asked if she could help me test out some lighting that I wanted to try out and she said sure! Her youngest came along, and it was perfect because my 9 year old and she could play upstairs together.  We had such a good time, just the two of us, and the images of her turned out beautiful! But of course that’s mainly because she’s in them 🙂

Thank you so much to my beautiful friend! These were what I was looking for and more! I can’t wait for our next project together! Congratulations on your studio!

And thanks to my loving husband, David, who took this image after we shooed him away. As you can see, space is tight in our basement. It’s our family room, my office, and our daughter’s play area. I used one Dynalite strobe with a 46″ Photek Softlighter II Umbrella on it with a double sided 5’x7′ Savage popup black/white background. I also had a Savage 5 in 1 Reflector out to help modify the light a bit, that’s what the extra empty stand with the reflector clamps is there for. I tethered my Canon Mark 5D III to my Macbook Pro and used the Canon EF 85mm f1.8 lens.
