Mother, Painter, Tattoo Artist Environmental Portraits

My friend and neighbor Julianna is an amazing woman, mother, artist and now a tattoo apprentice at Ceremony Tattoo Society in Philadelphia, PA. She already has a name for herself in the art world for her amazing paintings and drawings. She was also a featured artist with Grumbacher, a famous maker of art supplies such as paint brushes, oil and acrylic paints and more. And now she is about to take on the tattooing world as well.

Follow her on Instagram to see her sketches and finished tattoo work. Her flash sketches are simply amazing, and she’s taking on clients to practice her work on.

The above image is the freshly completed black and white tattoo with a hint of white ink in places. I believe that this was her fourth tattoo that she’s ever done(?). This is why I know that she is going to become very well known very soon, and she is in the right place for it.

I shot these using my Canon 6D , the Canon 24-70 f2.8mm L lens, Canon Speedlight 600 EX RT Flash, and the Canon Wireless Speedlight Transmitter ST-ES-RT . Normally I would have my Photek Softlighter with me, but I didn’t. So I bounced the flash that had a Stofen Diffuser on it. I have more ideas for her and her co-workers if they’ll let me, in the this amazing space.

A HUGE thank you to my good friend! You are going to go so far in this natural transition of your art and medium as you continue to grow in your creativity.  I can’t wait to get together soon.

Husband and Wife Grassroots Business For Wellness

Jen and Joe came to me needed photos to go with their new business that would not only go well with their marketing, but show everyone what they’re about.

The business is called JKOR INTEGRATIVE FITNESS & WELLNESS and are located in Bordentown City, NJ. What they are and I quote from their website,” a grassroots husband and wife team seeking to make a difference in people’s lives through our commitment to integrative fitness and wellness.” They are a husband and wife local business that compliment each other. Jen is a licensed therapist MS, LPC, BCC (Eligible) has been in the field of Behavioral Health for 19 years. What she does is focus on the well being of the mind. Joe is a licensed NASM CPT, TRX Qualified Personal Trainer  (STC, FTC ,GTC, RTC), and he focuses on the physical side of things in terms of your body.

They have a tremendous space for everything that you could think of. A calm, relaxing area where Jen meets her clients to get them mentally fit. And for Joe, he has an awesome space for working out with his clients using all sorts of what I call workout “toys” to help them get in the best physically shape of their life.

I think that they have found the perfect niche market for a huge need, a place where you can find everything in one place for this type of training and coaching.

Below are some behind the scenes look that my husband/assistant/business partner took for me.  I decided to use wireless flash for this shoot. Combining them with a Photek, a Westcott reflector and a homemade beauty dish(made out of an Ikea metal light fixture and a mixing bowl) for some additional “punch”. Normally that dish is on my Dynalite 4040 flash head(now replaced by the SH2000). However I was already using the one with the umbrella and love the freedom of no wires for once.

Photographing An Image For A Book

Sometimes my clients are friends or my clients most often become dear friends and this is the case here. Dolores and I met while networking during a W.I.N.(Women Interested in Networking) meetings. These were monthly meetings held at Villa Mannino’s in Bordentown, NJ on Route 130. A huge group of women would gather to meet, network, and eat lunch. It was started by Teri Petry and it was my first real introduction to getting up and explaining who I was, and what I was about in front of sometimes 80-100 people. I was very nervous, and scared. No judgement, we helped each other out, I had to have a 20 second elevator pitch and Teri had a question that was fun like, what is your favorite dessert or if you could go anywhere in the world on vacation, where would you go and you had to answer it with one thing or place.

This is where Dolores and I met and we hit it off from there, she was one of my first headshot, business clients and we fast became friends 😀

As time moved on, she met Francine Parham, introduced me, and we hit it off as well. I photographed them both and for their projects and events. They have both written and completed their book titled: The Ultimate Career Pocket Guide.

The UltimateCareerPocketGuidePhotoByDeirdreRyanPhotography

What this book is about is to help those who need to get through networking, your goals, and not just for the workplace. I see this for many in their personal and career goals, their own businesses, their current job and within the job market. I highly recommend this book!

Francine is from the corporate world and has vast experience and knowledge and Dolores is a consultant and development coach. The two have put their heads together and come up with this amazing book to help many people.

I photographed the image for their book at Jester’s Cafe, right here in Bordentown, NJ. Natural light, no assistants, no bounces or fill. I’m literally just standing in one of their large windows, using my Canon Mark 5D III and the Canon EF 50mm f1.8 lens and the Canon EF 16-35mm f2.8L lens. I know the owners, the food is great and it was the perfect time of the day to do this.

Afterwards, we ordered lunch, did some formal headshots at my house.

We laughed and had a great time, but most importantly, I understood and wanted to make sure that the focus was about what they wanted with a twist. I helped to come up with a location and suggested some ideas, and went from there. I have ideas to go further with them with hair, makeup, and more.

What I did for Dolores and Francine is help them with their branding, how they wanted to be seen on the cover for their target clients. Professional woman, talking over lunch, being casual, but serious about what it is that they’re doing. This is how they talk to other professionals. It could be anything that they are chatting about. As you can see on their websites, the images of themselves, I have photographed, is what they have envisioned and I have more ideas for them.

Here are questions to ask for yourself:

Where are you headed? Who needs to see you? What is it that you are doing? What’s next on the horizon for your business or company? Do you have a team of experts to help you visually? Can they insure that your images and presence are of the caliber that agencies and publications can expect of you? Can your images be printed for high end marketing and packaging?

If you’re ready for this step for your business, company or corporation, contact me. This is what I do, listen, make suggestions, help present my clients to their clients in the best light possible. Make sure that you and your brand look cohesive and flawless.

Photoshoot Fun With American Grit’s Rocky For Moms

This is one of my best friends, Lisa, my blond “sister”. I’ve known her since she was a freshman and I was a sophomore at Notre Dame High School in Lawrenceville, NJ.  Our friendship continued throughout college and into adulthood.  We’ve giggled, laughed and cried together.  When my husband and I lived in Los Angeles, she decided to follow her dream of becoming an actress from NYC to L.A., and for a time lived with us(it was so much fun!), until she got a place of her own and it was right around the corner from our apartment.  In Los Angeles is where she met her future husband, Henri.  She was one of my bridesmaids, I was one of hers. She helped to plan my baby shower, she helped to plan mine.

Now she’s been living in Texas with her husband, Henri, their daughter and son. I’m back in NJ with our daughter and my husband, working  as a commercial photographer, he as an editor for tv in NYC.

With a lot of ups and downs in her life, the worst being that Lisa has lost both of her parents to cancer. First her dad while living in Los Angeles. She would go back to NJ whenever she could and then when it was near his time, and to bury him. And then her mom. Click here to get the start/catch up of what happened in the Summer of 2014. And then a year ago, May 4th, 2015 she passed away.

Lisa has since fought her way back for her herself and her family in between and after. Wrote a book, her blog and website, getting sponsors, she’s just amazing! And recently been on the Fox tv show American Grit with John Cena.

BTW John, if you’re reading this, you might remember being on an internet radio show network called ComedyWorld and you were interviewed by Big Schwag and the guys on Wrestling 101. My husband was in the booth, and our friend called in and you took off your shirt. He has the full version, but here’s a link  to an old compilation with the clip in it.

Just last week, she came back home to NJ for one day to visit with Jenny, Megan and I. She stayed with her brother so that she could go to NYC to be interviewed by www.bikini.com and then fly back in time to compete in the Texas Shredder.

We all got to chat, have some girl time and I took some awesome photos of her wearing one of her sponsors t-shirts, Egg Whites International. I have been wanting to take photos of her for a long time, it’s something we always did. We have a lot of fun, she’s one of my favorite people to photograph, and I love her so much. I wanted her to have great images instead of cell phone pictures with sponsor swag.

With all that  she’s done and all that she’s doing now, I created a hashtag for her to remember even though, yes, she’s making these positive changes to her body, mind and spirit for her family, however deep down she’s truly doing all of this for her herself…#doitforlisa Follow her and use this hashtag to give her love and strength <3 #doitforlisa I love you and I’m proud of what you’re doing!

Branding Photography Shoot For A Chiropractor’s Office

I network a lot in person, and I was approached by Dr. Sarah Meanor, my chiropractor. She was re-doing her website and needed to have new business branding photos of her location and headshots. So I brought my gear, along with my assistant, a.k.a. business partner, a.k.a. my husband, and we had a list of shots that she needed for the site. Interior shots, her working on a patient, and a headshot.

Once we arrived, we got to work, setting up what we needed. First I did the shots of the office hallway, the 2 rooms, some details of the instruments she uses, and then the waiting area. While working on the hallway, I wanted the end room doorway to be opened, but it needed “something”, so I adjusted the room decor that was already there to give it a little depth and color. For those I used available light and my fast Canon L lenses. Then David assisted with setting up the headshot area and a light for me while she worked on the patient.

I only needed one light while Sarah worked, and while she worked, I moved my light with the white satin umbrella around her as she moved. Asking her to stop only so that I can get a few shots, and then we moved again. It was like an intricate dance. I used a Dynalite D805 Power pack and a 2020 head in a very small room, and this is not a battery powered system. The power supply was plugged into a socket in the hallway. David was using my other Dynalite M1000 power supply to set up for the headshot in the hallway.

You make things work.

With set up and break down, we were done in about 2 hours and 15 minutes. AND we made it back to watch our daughter’s basketball team win to get into the championship finals!

Thanks Dr. Sarah for letting me photograph you that day. The site looks great!

Time Well Spent’s Ann Laurie Fratticcioli – On Location Editorial Branding Photographer

Ann Laurie Fratticcioli is not just a client, but one that I consider a friend. I have photographed her twice before for her business Time Well Spent. Ann is an “concierge and personal errand service and attending to the specific needs of individuals”. She needed business branding photography and that’s what I provided for her.
Recently she was featured in the Moxie Magazine and had an article written about her:
Ladies Who Launch. If you saw this and was wondering who shot it, it was me. It looks great and I highly recommend reading the article.

Time Well Spent Concierge Service All Day Photo Shoot – NJ Editorial Photographer

Ann Laurie Fratticcioli, Owner of Time Well Spent Concierge Service, is not just a client but a friend.

We met at a Women’s Networking Lunch and just hit it off from the beginning. I photographed her in my studio for her head shot and she and my daughter hit it off great too. Why? She wears fun jewelry and it was love from there 😉

Ann does so much for people, this is just a very short list of what she can do.

  • Waiting for a delivery.
  • Grocery shopping.
  • Picking up dry cleaning.
  • Buying and wrapping gifts.
  • Oil changes and car inspections.
  • Writing and sending cards, invitations or “thank you” notes.
  • Taking care of things that you or a loved one may not be capable of doing because of an illness or medical condition.

Ann needed shots of her going to different locations to demonstrate just a few things that she does for her clients to help them in their everyday lives.
We had a lot of fun, the weather was gorgeous and made fun of the way people drove around us. Hey we’re in New Jersey, you have to just wonder about how people get away with the way they drive 😉

Photos Signal 22 Canteen-Volunteer Group Helping Emergency Workers

My friend Len Pope is a volunteer for this wonderful organization, Signal 22 Canteen. They are located   in Trenton, NJ.
Here is their mission statement:
The mission of the officers and members of Signal 22 is to respond to any man made, or natural disaster and to provide proper nourishment for police officers, fire fighters, EMS personnel, any other agency personnel assigned to any disaster. In furtherance of this mission we also provide sustenance to the victims of any disaster also.We will respond to such disasters within a 30 mile radius of the City of Trenton, New Jersey, and when called upon we will respond to events outside of the 30 mile radius. The area we cover has a population of over 1.2 million residents. During a normal work day, that population grows to over 1.5 million people.

We provide assorted liquids such as hot coffee, tea, cocoa; ice tea, soda, lemonade, and water. On short term operations we provide cold lunchmeat sandwiches, pork roll w/ cheese, egg sandwiches, and summer sausage. Long term operations we provide assorted hot platters, such as beef stew, pasta with meat, etc.

We also provide aid and comfort to emergency personnel. One example of this is when we take the work gloves of fire fighters, EMS personnel, and police officers, on cold winter nights, and warm up the gloves in the truck while emergency responders are eating, and return them warm and dry before they return to the disaster scene.

I urge everyone to send in donations to their address:
1005 South Clinton Ave., Trenton, NJ 08611
They are strictly non-profit and work on donations and with volunteers only. I have seen them work with others and hear from my many friends who are EMT’s, Fire Fighters and Police Officers who are ever so thankful for having them on the scene to provide them with nourishment to them and victims.
If you have any questions feel free to send them an email:

Tinya Cagle Inspirational/Gospel/Soul Musician-Deirdre Ryan Photography – NJ

This past President’s Weekend, I had the pleasure to photograph Tinya Cagle an Inspirational/Gospel/Soul musician and singer. I shot her on location at Hebe’s Music in Mt. Holly, NJ. Tinya was going to perform for a live audience for a video that day. Mt. Holly has great places to photograph around the town, so we did just that.
First we shot some pictures of her inside Hebe’s Music, then went outside around the corner and shot her on the street and in front of what used to be the City Hall and Jail. Then I shot pictures of her back inside of Hebe’s Music as she was performing.
I wanted to photograph her in her element, singing and most of all being herself. My goal was to make her comfortable with me and when this happens, I get great shots.
I love shooting musicians. I grew up listening to a wide variety of music and my all time favorite is The Beatles. Along with the music was the photographs that was taken. I love how they captured the artists and sometimes the wackiness of their characters. Some of the best pictures where done inside the recording studios and while they performed onstage. The recording sessions are where I think photographers captured the musicians at their most vulnerable, using the fastest speed film that they could find and not using a flash so as not to disturb the recording sessions.
I would love to “hear” what you have to say! Please post your comments below 🙂
