A Girl and Her Horse-Maile and Luna

If you haven’t guessed by now, my other passion is horses and riding. Years ago I used to show horses, jump them etc. I’m still an equestrian, and I ride and working on riding more and more each week as my schedule allows it. I met Maile at a farm we both rode at a while ago, since then she and her two horses have moved to Sporty Acres Farm, but we’ve kept in touch and remain friends.

She has this amazing thoroughbred horse named, Luna who is an amazing jumper and mover, loves to go fast. Maile is an amazing rider and watching her ride this horse, you can see the connection between them both.

I had this idea for a photo shoot and I wanted to originally shoot Maile and her husband David as he has a horse named Sailor. Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to make it. My idea is to showcase a horse and rider, for personal branding. Many equestrians have their own websites, are on Instagram, YouTube and Facebook. Riding is an expensive sport, so getting sponsorships really helps us.

To better understand more about the costs:
How Much Does It Cost To Enter A Hunter Jumper Show?
What Is Equestrian Show Jumping?
What Does It Take To Become and Olympic Equestrian?

Being an equestrian at a professional level is more expensive than sailing or tennis:

By having professional pictures to showcase at our trailers and stalls during shows, and online shows the commitment we’re making. Basically marketing ourselves to small and large brands to help us to afford what we do. And this includes our training, upkeep of our beloved animals, outfits, helmets, saddles, bridles, etc. The list is enormous, and why do we do this?

Because we love it.

The inside of the stables is pretty dark, so while I tried a few shots without my flash, I ended up having to use it. equestrian,personal branding,portraits,english riding,horse groming,tack up horse,horseback riding,horse portraits,horse jumping,flea-bitten grey horse,thoroughbred horse,New Jersey,Photo by Deirdre Ryan Photography,www.deirdreryanphotography.com,love,horse photographer,horse photography,equestrian photographer,equestrian photography,equestrian personal brandingequestrian,personal branding,portraits,english riding,horse groming,tack up horse,horseback riding,horse portraits,horse jumping,flea-bitten grey horse,thoroughbred horse,New Jersey,Photo by Deirdre Ryan Photography,www.deirdreryanphotography.com,love,horse photographer,horse photography,equestrian photographer,equestrian photography,equestrian personal brandingequestrian,personal branding,portraits,english riding,horse groming,tack up horse,horseback riding,horse portraits,horse jumping,flea-bitten grey horse,thoroughbred horse,New Jersey,Photo by Deirdre Ryan Photography,www.deirdreryanphotography.com,love,horse photographer,horse photography,equestrian photographer,equestrian photography,equestrian personal branding equestrian,personal branding,portraits,english riding,horse groming,tack up horse,horseback riding,horse portraits,horse jumping,flea-bitten grey horse,thoroughbred horse,New Jersey,Photo by Deirdre Ryan Photography,www.deirdreryanphotography.com,love,horse photographer,horse photography,equestrian photographer,equestrian photography,equestrian personal branding

After Maile’s ride, I wanted to get some shots because I could tell that both were pleased with their ride. I suggested to Maile to take off her helmet and give Luna some kisses and hugs. equestrian,personal branding,portraits,english riding,horse groming,tack up horse,horseback riding,horse portraits,horse jumping,flea-bitten grey horse,thoroughbred horse,New Jersey,Photo by Deirdre Ryan Photography,www.deirdreryanphotography.com,love,horse photographer,horse photography,equestrian photographer,equestrian photography,equestrian personal branding equestrian,personal branding,portraits,english riding,horse groming,tack up horse,horseback riding,horse portraits,horse jumping,flea-bitten grey horse,thoroughbred horse,New Jersey,Photo by Deirdre Ryan Photography,www.deirdreryanphotography.com,love,horse photographer,horse photography,equestrian photographer,equestrian photography,equestrian personal branding

No one was using the indoor arena, so Maile helped me with the large muslin background that I brought. The idea to have Luna step on it, I wasn’t too sure of, so we put it up, I set up one light. Thinking that I was going to Photoshop/extend the background to cover up the windows, but as I was editing the pictures, I decided to leave it alone.

With the lighting set up, I didn’t want it to be too punchy or bright, and the colour processing I did in Capture Pro One gave me the look I was going for. The pose Maile has in this first one with her composed, and serious face reminded me of the old paintings when no one smiled but held their horses in a regal manner. equestrian,personal branding,portraits,english riding,horse groming,tack up horse,horseback riding,horse portraits,horse jumping,flea-bitten grey horse,thoroughbred horse,New Jersey,Photo by Deirdre Ryan Photography,www.deirdreryanphotography.com,love,horse photographer,horse photography,equestrian photographer,equestrian photography,equestrian personal brandingequestrian,personal branding,portraits,english riding,horse groming,tack up horse,horseback riding,horse portraits,horse jumping,flea-bitten grey horse,thoroughbred horse,New Jersey,Photo by Deirdre Ryan Photography,www.deirdreryanphotography.com,love,horse photographer,horse photography,equestrian photographer,equestrian photography,equestrian personal brandingequestrian,personal branding,portraits,english riding,horse groming,tack up horse,horseback riding,horse portraits,horse jumping,flea-bitten grey horse,thoroughbred horse,New Jersey,Photo by Deirdre Ryan Photography,www.deirdreryanphotography.com,love,horse photographer,horse photography,equestrian photographer,equestrian photography,equestrian personal branding equestrian,personal branding,portraits,english riding,horse groming,tack up horse,horseback riding,horse portraits,horse jumping,flea-bitten grey horse,thoroughbred horse,New Jersey,Photo by Deirdre Ryan Photography,www.deirdreryanphotography.com,love,horse photographer,horse photography,equestrian photographer,equestrian photography,equestrian personal branding equestrian,personal branding,portraits,english riding,horse groming,tack up horse,horseback riding,horse portraits,horse jumping,flea-bitten grey horse,thoroughbred horse,New Jersey,Photo by Deirdre Ryan Photography,www.deirdreryanphotography.com,love,horse photographer,horse photography,equestrian photographer,equestrian photography,equestrian personal branding equestrian,personal branding,portraits,english riding,horse groming,tack up horse,horseback riding,horse portraits,horse jumping,flea-bitten grey horse,thoroughbred horse,New Jersey,Photo by Deirdre Ryan Photography,www.deirdreryanphotography.com,love,horse photographer,horse photography,equestrian photographer,equestrian photography,equestrian personal branding

Multi-Generation Family Portrait Session

I’ve had the pleasure to photograph the R. Family before, but just with five family members. This time, however, was much different.

Donna’s mom was turning 91 and she wanted all of her siblings, and the grandchildren together for a family portrait session at the house. Originally the pictures were going to be taken outside, but the weather had other ideas that day. The family came from all over for a special occasion and we had a really great time! The last setup was even on the front porch, it was raining, cold, but as you can see, well worth it.

Everything was set up in the living room, we moved furniture and items out of the way. I used a stool for some to sit on, another to stand on. Great-grandma was fine with standing for a little bit, but then needed to sit, so I grabbed a dining room chair.

My daughter was my assistant and yes, I paid her. She helped me bring everything in from the car, set up the two lights, modifiers, and then break it down, and bring it in the car, etc. We were made to feel like family and afterward were invited to have dinner. Leaving with our bellies full and faces hurt from laughing so much, we said our goodbyes as we headed back home.

Donna was so happy with these pictures, they were just what she wanted, to create gifts for the family to remember for years to come. Everything was planned ahead of time, I came to their home, set up, and while I made sure to be aware of everyone comfort, I took my time to be sure that everything was just right, and so that everyone’s personality would show through. And I think that I accomplished it.

The Russo Family Mini Photo Session at Hilltop Park in Bordentown, NJ

Tera and I have known each other for a long time, she worked at my daughters’ grade school and her younger sister and I were in the same grade. So when she won my session during a fundraiser I was so thrilled! And of course, I wanted to make sure that the images came out amazing because Tera’s sister is also a photographer.

The day was beautiful if not just a little bit on the breezy side, not surprising since the park overlooks Crosswicks Creek and the Delaware River. Their adorable little dog is Elijah and as sweet as can be! So, of course, having each of the girls holding him for their individual photos was the natural thing to do.

I love how they came color-coordinated, yet still being who they are, with their own personality. Sure having them ask to do goofy things at the time may have seemed strange at the time, but the end result is that the pictures came out looking like they do this sort of thing all the time, and are completely relaxed and at ease.

Thank you guys for such a great time and I hope that you love and cherish these for years to come!

Total Wealth Enhancement Editorial Photoshoot of Millstone Township, NJ for Proactive Advisor Magazine

Total Wealth Enhancement is a father and son team, started by Michael Kuczinski and then his son Michael Kuczinski Jr. joined him. It was another hot and sticky day, so we stayed inside since the building had a lot of areas to photograph with air conditioning LOL!

This one took a little longer, but we stayed on schedule. While the article was focused on Michael Sr., I knew that they wanted some with the two of them together and possibly on their own. We did three wardrobe changes, one was just as simple as taking off the suit jacket. We had a lot of laughs, turns out that Michael Jr. and I went to the same high school. Not the same class, I’m older, but still, pretty cool!

Once again I used the Flashpoint AD200 lights and Softlighter II, but I also used a new light modifier that I picked up at Allen’s Camera, a Phottix 26″ Quick Folding Octa Softbox. I’m now in love with this and want the next size up LOL!

Wealth Wisdom Group of Wilmington, Delaware for Proactive Advisor Magazine

On what was one of the hottest and muggiest days of the summer, I drove down to Wilmington, Delaware to photograph Bill Curry of Wealth Wisdom Group, at his office. We first went over some dates and times to coincide with the magazines’ deadline and what was needed and suggestions on what he should wear. As I mentioned before, I like to get to know the clients beforehand, so that when I arrive, the photoshoot can go smoothly and they be comfortable with me.

This time I didn’t bring my larger Flashpoint Xplor 600 lights but instead brought along the Flashpoint AD200 lights. So much easier to deal with since it’s just me with the camera gear, light stands, modifiers, and weights!

We started off inside his office, then moved to the hallway, I used one light and a small flash to add a little extra “kick” of light.

I asked if we had time for him to change and we can go outside. So I packed up and we both went downstairs to the edge of the parking lot where there was this nice area of a green park. And wow it was MUGGY! I used the Flashpoint AD200 outside to give a little extra kick since it was overcast. I didn’t want to stay outside any longer than was necessary for my client and for me.

These clients are very busy, while we put in a time slot of an hour, I try to get everything done way before that. I don’t have a team, there’s no time to tether my camera to a laptop either. Once I get to a location, I have maybe 10 minutes to check it out, look over what they have for wardrobe and then we start.

As you can see which image made the front cover and what they used as the finals for the article.

Women Who Turn Wrenches- The sheCANics of the Girls Auto Clinic Repair Center in PA

What is a sheCANic?

#sheCANic [she-kan-ik] noun

-A female of any age who has mastered the mechanics of “yes I can” and uses them to get to “yes I did.”
-She is empowered through awareness, education, and support. She inspires other women to do the same.
-She knows she is smart enough to learn and understand her car as well as her male counterparts do.
-She treats her car as she does her own body. She does not want to be her own physician but she does want to know how to secure her own health and how to prevent sickness and disease.
–She no longer fears the auto repair shop or the auto mechanic!

Personally I love this title and I try to use this in my train of thought each day and with my own daughter. I truly believe in her abilities and I let her know that if she believes in something, she can make it happen.

I was in contact with the Girls Auto Clinic Repair Center in Upper Darby, PA and got through via a mutual friend. They are an all-women auto repair shop, with one guy and he’s awesome. The Girls Auto Clinic Repair Center was founded by Patrice Banks, an engineer, storyteller, public speaker, entrepreneur, and auto mechanic. She found a niche that in the auto repair world, many women didn’t know very much about their vehicles, and would often get ripped off for repairs that never had to be done.  She holds clinics at the shop, educating women, about cars, repairs, and what to look out for.

They have been in the press a lot lately as a woman-owned and operated auto repair shop for women. And the latest is that there is a tv show based on the women at the shop in the works! So yeah, they are super busy, and I was really thankful that they allowed me to come in for this personal photo project of mine.

We had so much fun that day! They all have families, kids, and love what they do every single day. This is a unique place as they also have a full beauty salon and spa in the back as well.

Why did you decide to be a part of this project?
It’s a positive way to share my passion of cars.
What drew you into cars?
Curiosity mixed with a dash of rebellion.
How did you learn how to work on cars?
Other
What is the most rewarding part of what you do with vehicles?
When it’s a tough diagnosis and I figure out the root issue.
How many hours do you spend in the garage or driveway working on your vehicle?
All day! On everyone’s car.
What would be your dream vehicle if money wasn’t an issue? Details, please!
1972 Volkswagen super beetle. Black. White wall tires. Functional 8-track. Hurst shifter.
Would you have your own garage as well? C’mon, the sky’s the limit here 😃
Of course
If you race cars, what’s your favorite and why did you choose it?
I prefer Talley racing in any German made vehicles.
How did you get into racing?
Working at BMW.
How many hours have you or can you spend at the track?
I used to go once a month to Watkins Glen.
Is this a hobby, a full time job, or your full time business?
Full time job.
Are you good with fixing other things as well? Have you always tinkered?
Definitely
What was your first “project” or “baby”?
My 1972 beetle.
What was or is your most favorite car that you’ve owned? Mine was my 2001 Volvo V70 T5, she roared and purred….the photo below was taken on the day she died 🙁
My 1972 VW beetle
Do you remember each car that you’ve ever owned like they were your “babies”? I still have a soft spot in my heart for my very first, an ’81 Olds Omega.
Ha! My 72’ beetle
Which do you prefer?
Foreign and Imports
Why?
American cars are junk!
Favorite brand of car?
BMW
How many cars do you own?

Nope
If no, do you work on your family and friends vehicles?
Unfortunately
Is fixing your car or racing something you do with family or friends?
Friends
Do you see more women doing this now than before? If yes, why?
Yes !!! Cause I helped pave the road.
Years ago, high schools offered auto mechanic classes, home ec, and other trades and now they don’t. Why do you think they don’t and do you think they should still offer them instead of going to a separate vo-tech school?
Yes
Are there any nicknames for women who fix cars? How does it differ from the nicknames for guys?
Not sure
Being a woman who loves cars and knows how to work on them, do you find that you have any problems with the “boys” at first or even now? Like when you go car shopping, if a guy is helping you do you see any differences in how you’re treated when you start telling them more facts about vehicles than they were expecting? When test driving? 😉
That’s always a fun scenario.
Do guys respect you in your field? If yes explain? If no, why not?
It’s earned respect.
Do you prefer older classic cars or the newer ones out today? Can you explain?
It’s apples and oranges.
My favorite cars since I was in grade school was the 1954 silver Mercedes Benz GullWing with red leather interior and the Duesenbergs from the 1920s. Are there any vehicles that still stand out in your mind from when you were a kid?
1957 Nash Metropolitan and the Plymouth Valeri.
Why do you think there aren’t as many women mechanics or race car drivers as men?
Too many men!
Do you feel that as a woman, you feel very much more in control when you are able to work on your own vehicle? That there’s a satisfaction in knowing you are accomplishing what is typically a “guys job” or do you not feel that way at all?
Sometimes. Ok. Yes!!!
Last question, what would you tell young ladies and girls today who might be interested in a career that involved cars?
Follow your passion and dreams regardless of what it is!

Do you see more women doing this now than before? If yes, why?
Yes. Social media has made it easier to connect with women all over.
Years ago, high schools offered auto mechanic classes, home ec, and other trades and now they don’t. Why do you think they don’t and do you think they should still offer them instead of going to a separate vo-tech school?
They push college way too much. Trades should be offered as early as middle school. Vo tech or in school, both are good options.

Probably.
Do you prefer older classic cars or the newer ones out today? Can you explain?
Yes. There’s less that can go wrong with them.
My favorite cars since I was in grade school was the 1954 silver Mercedes Benz GullWing with red leather interior and the Duesenbergs from the 1920s. Are there any vehicles that still stand out in your mind from when you were a kid?
1973 Ford Falcon XB GT from Mad Max.
Why do you think there aren’t as many women mechanics or race car drivers as men?
The stigma of poor treatment drives them away before they pursue it.
Do you feel that as a woman, you feel very much more in control when you are able to work on your own vehicle? That there’s a satisfaction in knowing you are accomplishing what is typically a “guys job” or do you not feel that way at all?
Absolutely
Last question, what would you tell young ladies and girls today who might be interested in a career that involved cars?
Go for it, 100%.

Is this a hobby, a full time job, or your full time business?
Racing is a hobby, Repairing Vehicles is my Full Time Dream Job!
If you have another type of full time job, do you wish that you could do this full time instead?
I am also a licensed Cosmetologist, I cut hair and do nails in my spare time which switches things up. I also am a Casino Dealer for a private company for the past 18 yrs and do jobs for them which is fun.
If yes, why haven’t you done this?

My Husband
If no, do you work on your family and friends vehicles?
Yes I do
Is fixing your car or racing something you do with family or friends?
Yes for both
Do you see more women doing this now than before? If yes, why?
Yes, knowing there are more women in the field is comforting and we can build a bond and support each other in this field.
Years ago, high schools offered auto mechanic classes, home ec, and other trades and now they don’t. Why do you think they don’t and do you think they should still offer them instead of going to a separate vo-tech school?
Not sure why they do not. IT should be available during school or even after school classes. It’ll help kids in the long run. Keep kids off the street or at least in a safe environment. There are more pros then cons to bring these type of classes back.
Are there any nicknames for women who fix cars? How does it differ from the nicknames for guys?
Not that I know of.
Are there nicknames for women who race cars? How does it differ from the nicknames for guys?
Not that I know of.
Being a woman who loves cars andknows how to work on them, do you find that you have any problems with the “boys” at first or even now? Like when you go car shopping, if a guy is helping you do you see any differences in how you’re treated when you start telling them more facts about vehicles than they were expecting? When test driving? 😉
Yes I have and still do at times. Only because they don’t know what I do or just assume all girls don’t know anything about cars.
Do guys respect you in your field? If yes explain? If no, why not?
For the most part Yes.
Do you prefer older classic cars or the newer ones out today? Can you explain?
Classic however the newer sport vehicles are cool too
My favorite cars since I was in grade school was the 1954 silver Mercedes Benz GullWing with red leather interior and the Duesenbergs from the 1920s. Are there any vehicles that still stand out in your mind from when you were a kid?
As a kid no. Since I started working on car G body vehicles always catch my eye.
Why do you think there aren’t as many women mechanics or race car drivers as men?
Lack of knowing it is a possibility. Not enough support for them.
Do you feel that as a woman, you feel very much more in control when you are able to work on your own vehicle? That there’s a satisfaction in knowing you are accomplishing what is typically a “guys job” or do you not feel that way at all?
Oh yeah and the fact I do it better is an amazing feeling.
Last question, what would you tell young ladies and girls today who might be interested in a career that involved cars?
Go and look into schools, get tours and ask lots of questions. Visit shops or schools. Talk to people in the field.

Photographing Haddon Financial Solutions for Proactive Advisor Magazine

David Chalmers and Keith Herman are the faces of Haddon Financial Solutions are located in Haddon, NJ. When I’m shooting for a publication, I tend to shoot with a lot of space for any type that is needed or if they need to crop in closer. With Proactive Advisor Magazine and others, they have a printed magazine, then they have the articles online. I provide quite a few images and they choose the best ones that are suited for their needs. Here I’ve chosen my favorites.

The process is simple and straightforward enough. I get an email for the assignment, to see if I’m available, then an introduction is made to their client. I then reach out and make arrangements with the client as the time for the photoshoot. This is also the time that I choose to get to know them, offer suggestions on what to wear, often they’ve had their pictures taken for articles before, while sometimes they haven’t and they need reassurances that this will be ok.

If I’m able to, I scout the location. But much of the time, I’m not, so I do a quick Google search, check out the building if I can, and go in as light as I’m able but prepared for anything. My goal here is to make everyone look relaxed within the environment that they work in with their own clients. If I can and there’s time, I take them outside. Being quick, polite, a good sense of humor, and professional to make everyone feel comfortable will ensure that I’ll get the best images possible.

For this day, I completely overpacked, but I used 2 lights in each office, the main was a Flashpoint 600 Xplor with a Softlighter II and the other was another with a small Westcott 1×2 Rapidbox Switch Modifier Softbox. For the outside, I only used the Flashpoint 600 Xplor with a Softlighter II. My camera is the Canon Mark 5D III and I used the Canon 24-70mm f2.8 L IS lens and the Canon 70-700mm f2.8 L non-IS lens.
