Studio Portraits Of My Friend Roseanne

My dear friend Roseanne has just opened her Pilates Fusion and Barre Fitness Studio here in Bordentown, NJ and I couldn’t be more proud of her! This tiny powerhouse, former ballerina, mother of three beautiful girls,  juggles a full time job, teaches Pilates both as a group class and in private homes, and is a weightlifter who holds the record for bench press at 105 lbs! She won the First Place trophy for the World Natural Powerlifting Federation(WNPF). But something tells me that she can do much more than that 😉

So I asked if she could help me test out some lighting that I wanted to try out and she said sure! Her youngest came along, and it was perfect because my 9 year old and she could play upstairs together.  We had such a good time, just the two of us, and the images of her turned out beautiful! But of course that’s mainly because she’s in them 🙂

Thank you so much to my beautiful friend! These were what I was looking for and more! I can’t wait for our next project together! Congratulations on your studio!

And thanks to my loving husband, David, who took this image after we shooed him away. As you can see, space is tight in our basement. It’s our family room, my office, and our daughter’s play area. I used one Dynalite strobe with a 46″ Photek Softlighter II Umbrella on it with a double sided 5’x7′ Savage popup black/white background. I also had a Savage 5 in 1 Reflector out to help modify the light a bit, that’s what the extra empty stand with the reflector clamps is there for. I tethered my Canon Mark 5D III to my Macbook Pro and used the Canon EF 85mm f1.8 lens.

Did Someone Say Pin Up Photography?

And now for something a little different:

Back in L.A. I worked for a lingerie shop that is famous for it’s fabulous custom pieces of lingerie and costumes that were made of gorgeous fabrics and sewn right there in the same building as the shop itself. Celebrities came all the time to get certain items of clothing because they knew the name and how well they were made, and the designs were so good.

It was a fun job because not only did I do retouching,(on models who required hardly any at all),but I was photographing test models and the regular models as well. Talk about long days, but I loved photographing these women and girls. Some had a lot of tattoos, were cover models on Penthouse and Playboy, I made long lasting friendships, and realized that I loved this type of genre.

My friend Jacqueline owns and  operates a cool shoppe here in Bordentown called Phoenix Rising.  She brings in a lot of famous pinup and rockabilly clothes,  and designer leather boots and shoes. The store smells wonderful with scents by ToyoMilk, Femme Fatale and Fate and Fortune perfumes. Plus, she supports local artists who create jewelry, soaps and hand knitted items.

PINUP_DeirdreRyanPhotography_0003

She approached me with this great concept. The idea was for Valentine’s Day so it was a Pinup Teaser Ladies Night Out. First I did a test run with Jacqui herself and she did an amazing job!  And so, I set up everything in her shop…I brought my 9′ seamless paper, background stand, Dynalite strobes, and everything else. PINUP_DeirdreRyanPhotography_0006

PINUP_DeirdreRyanPhotography_0012

I had a director’s chair, Jacqueline found these suitcases and she also had a  a chaise lounge. My friend Randy of Randy Now’s Man Cave let me borrow his rotary phone and a small record player to use as props.  He has a bunch a great items in his shop, from vinyl, cds, books, collector items, and cool record players! PINUP_DeirdreRyanPhotography_0013

Most of clothes are all from Phoenix Rising, some of the shoes and jewelry as well. Hair and makeup were done on site by Jacqueline. My husband was there to help out, I know, right? He’s actually very good with clothing and other things besides photography and  gear, (he’s also my business partner). He did keep out of the way during the shooting part. We had food, wine, and the ladies had fun playing dress up and then feeling pretty with me directing them in from of my camera and lights.

PINUP_DeirdreRyanPhotography_0009

And that’s not easy to do, I had them twist and turn to accentuate their best assets and features. My goal was to make everyone feel comfortable. We were laughing, chit chatting, and I can’t tell you everything that was discussed..shhh!   Some of the ladies had ideas like applying makeup with a mirror, which was a great concept, so we went with it!

PINUP_DeirdreRyanPhotography_0001

All in all, it was a big success! Thank you everyone who made it happen!

The Insomniacs, Spanking Charlene and The Doughboys Instead of a School Event

Once again, Randy Now did it again! This time it was for his GARAGE A GOGO WEEKEND held on September 18th and 19th, 2015.Randy Now Garage A GoGo Weekendat The Open Arts Stage Theater in Bordentown was rocking to three incredible bands. The first night was The Insomniacs, Spanking Charlene and The Doughboys. The second night was The Droogettes, Sorala, Palmyra Delran and The Grip Weeds. I wasn’t able to make it the second night though 🙁

I was a torn about letting my daughter attend Bingo Night at her school or come with me to the concert. At her elementary school, Bingo Night was my committee that I would help out with and run. But this night was something that I wanted to go to, and I thought, you know what? She’s really into The Doughboys, and she’ll love the other two bands. I decided to bring her with me, and her other two friends were helping their dad in the back too. And guess what?  THEY.LOVED.EVERYONE.

First up was The Insomniacs,  are from NJ and WOW!!!! Check out their new vinyl single here. And look for their album on iTunes -Just Enjoy It!

Then came Spanking Charlene from NYC. The girls were super impressed with the lead singer, a powerful woman. They LOVED her! Check out their album Where are The Freaks.

Then came The Doughboys! Plus Myke Scavone was about to go on tour with The Yardbirds in October and November 2015, so that was pretty exciting. Now he had something in common with Eric Clapton and Jimmy Paige. The Doughboys have been covering songs by The Yardbirds for a long time. I wish that I could’ve seen one of those shows.

My daughter and her friends had a very good time, might I even say epic? They were so impressed with seeing a strong woman singing and wanted to meet her, and got to get their pictures taken. This to me and my friends, who were the other parents there, agreed, gave our girls an education into music and culture that was different than the norm.

As always, I want to thank these bands, The Open arts Stage and to Randy Now at Randy Now’s Man Cave located right here in Bordentown, NJ. If it were for Randy, then none of these act would in such a great venue like this in our little town.  Love you Randy!!!!!

Costumes, Drill Teams and The Joker

Halloween is a big deal in my town, so big that we have a lot of events. Halloween decorating contests, we have a Ghost Walk, a parade, and a street shuts down just for that one night. Our local schools even have big Halloween events as fundraisers.

Our daughter is a Junior Girl Scout, she’s dressed up as Rumpleteazer from the musical Cats. My husband who sews, made the costume, wig, tail and did her makeup. She and her troop walked in the parade, threw candy to people along the route and had a good time. I got to walk and sit in the back on the pick up truck in front of us from the Daisy Troop in front of us. My husband’s costume was The Joker that he created from items he had already.

Just a little ways in front of us was the Camden Sophisticated Sisters Drill Team, and not too far behind us was   The Baltimore Westsiders Marching Band.

Kids Got A Snow Day For Sledding In Bordentown City

On Tuesday, January 27th, 2015, the children in Bordentown had a snow day due to the year’s first blizzard. The best place to have an outdoor activity is the sledding hill is Lime Kiln Alley, that goes toward the nature preserve alongside Black’s Creek. Children of all ages and their parents love to get on their sleds and race down the hill. The snow was perfect!

The 5th Annual Green Fair in Bordentown, NJ

The 5th Annual Green Fair was held on Saturday, June 14, 2014 at the Carslake Community Center in Bordentown City. Many vendors were there to show off their eco-friendly items and products that they make or sell from companies. There were demonstrations, activities for children, food, and much more.

Cynthia assists Kinsey with drilling a bottle cap into a large mural that empowers the next generation of environmentally conscious and creative citizens. This project is by MAD Splatter, a local non profit organization that exposes children to the world through the eyes of others and help them draw a connection between community service and self-enrichment. They create parties for children to teens to celebrate the art of Making A Difference.

Bordentown City’s Annual Street Fair

Bordentown City, NJ is a town rich in history and offers a lot of events that happen every year. It’s where I was born and raised. After living in MA for college, Philadelphia for work and then Los Angeles for 10+ years, I’ve been back home since October 2008. It’s a little town that has a good quality of life to raise a family, great schools, and centrally located to NYC and Philadelphia and just a 3 hour drive(give or take) to Washington, DC.

Every year we have our Annual Street Fair in May and thousands of people come to my town to stroll down the main street that is closed off to buy handmade goods, eat from our local restaurants and listen to music, and have fun with the kids.

The Foundation for Bordentown Traditions is a non-profit started by members of the community. They were organized to plan, develop, organize and fund community events in Bordentown. It is their goal that these events will raise funds to bring back the Fireworks. I volunteered a couple of hours at this booth getting donations and people to purchase 50/50s. It was a lot of fun talking to people and catching up with friends.
